Shoreham, Ormond Beach ~ 2009

It may take a while for pictures to load.

As 2009 began, the recession deepened and real estate prices became too attractive to ignor. Direct oceanfront condominiums that had been selling upwards from $400,000 in 2007 were now selling for half that price or even lower.

At the same time mortgage interest rates were the lowest in many decades. We crunched some numbers and heard opportunity knocking.

Thus began a search to find what Beach Retreat did not have:
1 - Direct Oceanfront - no more traffic noise from A1A
2 - Safety - no more crossing a busy highway to reach the beach
3 - Elevator - no more climbing stairs while carrying bundles
4 - Garage - place to park car out of the wind, seaspray & weather
5 - Laundry - in or near our unit
6 - Location - wider, traffic-free beach close to shopping
7 - Newer Building - as Beach Retreat ages maintenance costs rise

The search was made more challenging because we were searching for a home that also had the beautiful ocean views and great balcony we love in Beach Retreat.

This furnished unit in the Shoreham is the fruit of our search. We consider the larger and more modern kitchen a definite bonus and the second bedroom and bath an invitation for guests. What may not be obvious from the photos is the enormous size of the walk-in closets!

Right now our plan is to sell Beach Retreat when the real estate market is more favorable and when more "baby boomers" are looking for a retirement or summer beach home. We will apply the proceeds of that sale toward paying off Shoreham. Until then, we will homestead Beach Retreat and rent Shoreham. So, sticking our necks out ... the adventure continues.
